LOCAL CONTRACTORS GROUP

COMES TO AID OF

WORLD WAR II VETERAN

The Volusia Air Conditioning Contractors Association came to the aid of an 88 year old World War II Veteran, Mr. George Bumpus, who was living in a mobile home with a non-functioning Air Conditioning System.

Tom McGuire, President of Flair Air Conditioning and Chairman of VACCA, was contacted by a fellow Rotarian regarding the situation. McGuire said he would send a Service Technician out to the home to see if his company could help. The Technician verified the customer’s AC unit had a defective compressor. Because the unit was over 30 years old it would not be practical to replace the compressor. In discussing the situation with Mr. Bumpus who was living on a fixed income, it was obvious that he could not afford to replace the system.

Mr. McGuire then decided to contact VACCA members to see if anyone had a good used unit that could be used. Although, no one had a good used unit available, members started pledging monetary assistance to replace the unit with a new one. Within a few days enough pledges were received from members and with the help of VACCA to offset any additional costs not covered, we were able to install a new unit for Mr. Bumpus.

The VACCA Members Pledging Donations were

Air Current, Cunningham, Jim Powell Territory Manager for Carrier, Central FL A/C, Flagler County Heating & A/C, Heart Heating & A/C, Igloo Air, Air Specialists of Volusia, Jacobs Sheet Metal, Johnstone Supply, A1 Reliable, Carrier Enterprise FL, Servair Heating & AC, Flair Heating & A/C and Total Comfort Heat & Air.

Mr. Bumpus was in tears when he was informed of what the organization and its individual members had done to help him. He could not believe the generosity provided him by an organization he previously knew nothing about. Per Tom McGuire, VACCA was very gratified and proud to step up to help this wonderful veteran who had served his country in World War II in the Army Artillery.

Although we are not able to do this for everyone once in a while a situation develops and the membership comes through. I’m very proud of this organization and especially those individuals who personally pledge the monies needed to aid Mr. Bumpus.
